Millennial Reason No. 10: "The Public Perception"

Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.
— MATTHEW 9:35 (NIV)

(This series of devotionals will be addressing an article titled 12 Reasons Millennials Are OVER Church. The author provides 12 reasons why Millennials don't attend church. I expound on them in this series. )

“Let’s be transparent,” is a phrase I often hear in church that translates into “Let’s be honest and tell something true about ourselves we’re not so proud of, and that nobody may know about, and has a happy ending.” Thing is, this phrase, and time of transparency, is often shared amongst the members of its church while the perception to the public is “We got it all together.” We may share our faults with each other, but we allow the public to think that we think we’re perfect.

The time Jesus spent in synagogues teaching, preaching, or healing was minimal. Jesus knew His purpose would best be fulfilled beyond the walls of the church and reaching people. We too can heal every disease and sickness as Christ did – through our testimonies. It wasn’t long ago you were smoking, drinking, clubbing, sexing, or whatever else you left behind for Christ, so don’t use your breakthrough to shun those who are where you were yesterday. Instead, destroy the public perception that Christians are snobby, do-gooders, and be transparent with someone who needs a life preserver and not someone already in the boat.
