Millennial Reason No. 7: We Want to Be Mentored, Not Preached At

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
— MATTHEW 28:19-20 (NIV)

(This series of devotionals will be addressing an article titled 12 Reasons Millennials Are OVER Church. The author provides 12 reasons why Millennials don't attend church. I expound on them in this series. )

The value of authentic relationships is desperately missing. We are experiencing the largest percentage of fatherless homes and a friend is someone who gives you a thumbs up 5 hundred miles away or retweets your tweet. You can attend church service and earn a college degree without getting out of your pajamas, but nothing will replace feeling loved and valued by members of your congregation.

We have to be careful not to become distracted by church business and forget the business of the church – Discipleship. If I don’t feel loved, if I don’t feel valued, why come? Through love we reach other generations and teach them everything Jesus taught us. When we value other generations, we take the time to mentor and stand with. Church has the ability to offer Millennials something they may not be able to find anywhere else – an authentic relationship.

Heavenly Father, I will make disciples and teach them to obey everything You have commanded me. Thank You for being with me always! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
