Millennial Reason No. 3: Helping the Poor Isn't a Priority

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, … I needed clothes and you clothed me…
— MATTHEW 25:35 – 40 (NIV)

(This series of devotionals will be addressing an article titled 12 Reasons Millennials Are OVER Church. The author provides 12 reasons why Millennials don't attend church. I expound on them in this series. )

My pastor once taught us that we pray and study in church to prepare us to do ministry outside the walls of church. It’s unfortunate that many churches never make it past the front doors of their church to touch the lives of those in their communities that are in need. If we aren’t careful, we can spend a lot of hours inside those doors - church meetings, planning meetings, social functions, church anniversary, building fund committee meeting – and become too exhausted to do what Christ called us to do.

Christ said He was anointed to proclaim good news to the poor and was sent to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind. The less fortunate and the “have-nots” is where Jesus’ heart was. Homeless shelters and other local agencies would love to receive calls from our churches asking, “How can we help.” Helping the poor has to become a priority, and it starts with leaving the walls of our churches.

Heavenly Father, I know what I do for others, I do for You. Open my heart and eyes to see opportunities to help my community and those less fortunate. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
