Mercy Over Judgment

Because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
— JAMES 2:13 (NIV)

It can be easy to judge a book by its cover or to judge someone after being convinced by the rumors or gossip a human being has been reduced to. I too have fallen to the propaganda and judged people based of the narrow light shed on their lives during a situation or circumstance they’ve faced. It was my way of the land until I found myself on the opposite side of the jury being judged.

Since I’ve had a taste of my own medicine, I now offer mercy to those who aren’t perfect and have made mistakes. I no longer retract my hand from people by looking down on them or disassociating from them, but rather extend the compassionate hand of Christ to them in their time of need. Christ showed mercy to tax collectors, adulterers, thieves, and others we’d often not like to deal with. Maybe it was easy for Jesus because He saw past the sin and saw the person God created and loved. Will you try?

Hate the sin, not the sinner

All Over the World

Let me say first that I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith in Him is being talked about all over the world.
— Romans 1:8 (NLT)

What are you known for? Before your friends go to see a movie, do they ask your opinion if it’s worth seeing? When their kids have an issue with math, do they call you up because you’re a mathematics expert? When their marriage is on the brinks, do they call you to pray for them because of your faith? When people at work need a word of encouragement, do they ask you for a word from God? As a believer your faith is not just key in your life, but also in the lives of others. There may have been a time when just going to church for Sunday service was enough, but the world we live in now needs our service. Let’s give people all over the world something to talk about - your faith.

Thank God for you!

God Sets It Right

The God-setting-things-right that we read about has become Jesus-setting-things-right for us. And not only for us, but for everyone who believes in Him... He got us out of the mess we’re in and restored us to where He always wanted us to be.
— ROMANS 3:21-28 (MSG)

Evil is seemingly running rampant more and more every day, but know that God is still faithful. He has a way of setting things right during times when we can’t even begin to comprehend what’s going on around us. God sees the injustices and treachery we are experiencing. What we have to remember is God does not respond to what we do; we respond to what God does. When we realize this, God makes it possible to live in His rightness in what otherwise could be unbearable.

Don’t give up on God or humanity just yet! He has placed the solution to the condition of this world in the body of Christ. Continue to be in lockstep with God and let Him set the pace for getting us out of the mess we’re in and to restore us to where He’s always wanted us to be. Allow Christ to use you and trust God will set things right through us.

Respond to what God does

What's For You is For You!

Jesus answered, ‘If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.’
— JOHN 21:22 (NIV)

What Jesus has for you is special. There’s no need to be jealous of how He blesses others around you or to be worried that He will run out of blessings when you finally make it to the front of the line. Jesus is infinite in power and commands a multitude of blessings in one hand alone. With these blessings, Christ is mindful of you and knows what you need and when you need it.

When you try to keep up with the Joneses or turn your attention from what God has to see what your neighbor has, you stop following Him. Instead, when Jesus blesses a believer with a new home, rejoice with them. If God heals their body, join in praise with them. When Christ blesses others, let it increase your faith instead of question it. What God has for you is for you. Continue to follow Him and don’t let go until He blesses you again, and again, and again, and again…

When you’re blessed, I’m blessed

In Good Company

So don’t be surprised, dear brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.
— 1 JOHN 3:13 (NLT)

Jesus knew no sin. He is God’s son who loved people, healed people, forgave people, prayed for people, gave to people, and changed people’s lives. And guess what? The world hated Him. So, when you’re not conforming to this world, or adopting its agenda because you have decided to live for Christ and obey God, you may not always fit in, and people may hate you. But I want to encourage you that you are in good company with Christ. Your prize is not of this world. It awaits you! But while you’re here doing the will of God, you will experience His favor, grace, and blessings. Don’t get tired of doing what is right. Remember whose child you are and that you weren’t created to be like everyone else.

You’re wonderfully made

Start Practicing

Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He really is.
— 1 JOHN 3:2 (NLT)

In high school I always wondered where I would work and how I would live after college. There were so many obstacles, influences, and activities ahead that I had zero clues about. If I could go back and talk to my eighteen-year-old self, I would tell him to focus more on being like Christ. I now know that when I seek Him first, and His righteousness, Christ will add everything I need. And because God told me I’m His child, I know when Christ returns, I will be like Him – so I can start practicing now! I can forgive today. I can give unselfishly today. I can show compassion to others. I can grant grace and extend mercy. I can pray for others. I can present God’s love as Christ’s ambassador. No matter my past, I can start practicing being like Christ today! Will you join me?

Good Enough for God

Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean!
— Micah 7:19 (NLT)

What thoughts of unforgiveness are you holding on to? Did a loved one do something to you years ago that still hurts or maybe they said something last week that you just can’t get over? Today my friend, I want to encourage you to let go and extend the same compassion God extended you for your sin. Just as Christ has given you grace; you can give grace to others for the wrong they’ve done toward you. God trampled your sin under His feet and threw them in the depths of the ocean, and if it’s good enough for God, it’s good enough for you! You don’t have to protect yourself from being hurt again, because you’re doing as the Lord has commanded to forgive one another. And think about it: Who can protect you better than Jesus? So go ahead… let it go.

I’m done carrying it

Take Time to See It

The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to Him.
— PSALM 24:1 (NLT)

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, but are you too busy to see it? Are the job God blessed you with or the errands He gave you the ability to run keeping you from experiencing His creation? If so, give yourself a break and take time to see it. Visit places you’ve always dreamt of going. Take the long way home to see something you hadn’t noticed before. Go for a walk after dinner or just sit in your backyard and watch the quiet winds gently move each cloud above you. Every day is a gift (which is why it’s called the present) and there’s something new to take in every single moment. Take time to Live Life!

Don’t waste it

Control Your Tongue

If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.
— JAMES 1:26 (NLT)

When you speak, do people try to find the nearest exit? Nothing speaks more about who you are than the words you use. When Jesus spoke, people felt loved, uplifted, and peace. How do people feel when you speak? Take time to control your tongue and think about how your words make others feel. If you find that you’ve spoken poorly to loved ones, co-worker, or friends, you can change your ways today by thinking before you speak. Ask yourself, “Is God pleased with how I speak to others?” Plus, if you really love God, and He is in you, it should be represented by how you speak to your spouse, son, daughter, parents, brother, sister, grandparents, uncle, aunt, cousin, best friend, pastor, boss, co-worker, friend…

Do What It Says

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.
— JAMES 1:22 (NLT)

There are sixty-six books in the bible. Each book is written by people inspired by God. Its message is given to all to experience the love of God and become followers of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. To know this love, there are commands, teachings, and encouragement throughout the pages of scripture that give direction and inspiration to help you grow in God and with Christ. The only way to gain full access to this relationship is to do what God’s word says. It’s not enough to just listen. What you hear from God you must put into action. And you’re not alone in accomplishing this. You have the Holy Spirit to guide and direct you along the way. So, where do you start? Start by doing the last thing Jesus told you to do.

Don’t fool yourself

Our Generous God

Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong. Let them turn to the LORD that He may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for He will forgive generously.
— ISAIAH 55:7 (NLT)

God gives everyone an opportunity to repent. He wants everyone to change their ways, and even their thoughts of evil, to a lifestyle reflective of His love, kindness, and compassion. And when people make this decision to change their ways, the Lord has mercy on them and forgives them generously. The same manner in which God forgives us He wants us to forgive others. It’s because of God’s mercy that we aren’t consumed, and this same mercy is offered to all that turn to our generous God. Let’s be intentional about showing others mercy and forgiveness. This is the way of our Lord, and it is what the world needs today.

Mercy goes a long way

Blessing in the Activity

Do everything without complaining and arguing…
— PHILIPPIANS 2:14a (NLT)

If you’ve been an adult for a while, you’ve probably realized that you have to do a lot of things you don’t necessarily want to. Whether it’s preparing meals or driving to work in ten feet of snow or waking up early to exercise or staying up late to get your homework assignment complete, you know you have to, but you really, really rather not. When this spirit sneaks into your day of activities, remember Christ wants you do everything without complaining and arguing. If you complain, you may miss the blessing or lesson Jesus has prepared to groom and grow you to the next level. Try not to get stuck in the activity by realizing the blessing in the activity. After all, where has complaining gotten anyone?

A Reason to Do It

A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
— MATTHEW 22:39 (NLT)

God wants to bless you because of your actions and not the actions of others. It’s important that in every situation you remember you are only in control of what you do and not what others do. God wants you to honor your father and mother not because they were “Parent of the Year,” but because it brings God glory. He wants you to love your spouse not based on what they do, but because He wants you to love them as Christ loves the church. So, when you love your neighbor as yourself, it’s not predicated on your relationship with them, but your relationship with Christ. This way your obedience isn’t governed by their action, but it’s because your desire is to please God and do right by Christ.

Do it for Jesus

No One Can Do It Better

Be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for Him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes.
— PSALM 37:7 (NLT)

Take a minute and think about everything you can do better than God. Nothing, right?! God is all power, all knowing, and everywhere at the same time. So, why is it so hard for you to turn over everything you worry about to God? Why do you still allow itty, bitty humans to stress you out when you know God is bigger than them? No one can handle your situation better than Jesus, so let Him. Allow Christ to give you the answer to your problem. Don’t worry about evil people or their antics. Instead, remain obedient to His word and be still in the presence of the Lord. Wait patiently for Him to act on your behalf. You’ll be happy you did.

You Don't Have To Do It

Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.
— ROMANS 8:12 (NLT)

We all have emotional reflexes. It’s how we mentally, verbally, or physically react to what we’re experiencing. We believe these actions to be out of our control and sometimes refer to them as “natural reactions.” If we’re honest, the majority of these “natural reactions” aren’t necessarily pleasing to God. If someone curses toward us, we “naturally” want to curse them back. If someone treats us bad, we “naturally” want to make sure it’s the last time they do so.

I want to remind us that’s there is nothing natural about sin and we don’t have to do what our sinful nature urges us to do. Allow God to fight our battles. He can fight for us a lot better than we can. Doing so exercises our trust and faith in Him. So next time there is an opportunity to sin, remember, we don’t have to do it!

Be still…

Successful

He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.
— PSALMS 1:1 – 3 (NKJV)

My Pastor preached a sermon about “How to Be Blessed” and I thought it was worth passing on to you. He used Psalms 1:1 – 3 to illustrate three points: Selective, Surrender, and Successful.

Point number three reveals how God will bless us after we’ve decided to be selective and have surrender. See, points one and two is what we do, then God does number three: blesses us with success! God promised that whatever we do will prosper. That’s success! He can take our failure and turn it into success when we have followed His law. We don’t have to worry about the outcome. That’s God’s job as long as we’re obedient. All we have to do is be selective and surrender to Christ and He will make sure we’re successful.

Surrender

…But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night.
— PSALMS 1:1 – 3 (NKJV)

My Pastor preached a sermon about “How to Be Blessed” and I thought it was worth passing on to you. He used Psalms 1:1 – 3 to illustrate three points: Selective, Surrender, and Successful.

Point number two tells us in order to be blessed, we have to surrender to the Lord. How we surrender to God is by trusting Him in everything. We fully trust that His Word is life and truth. We understand His way is not a burden, but a privilege and gift. Therefore, we find delight in His law because we know they aren’t meant to constrain us, but free us from the bondage of sin. And we know His Word because we meditate on it day and night so that we may do His Word to live a blessed life.

I surrender, Lord

Selective

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful…
— PSALMS 1:1 – 3 (NKJV)

My Pastor preached a sermon about “How to Be Blessed” and I thought it was worth passing on to you. He used Psalms 1:1 – 3 to illustrate three points: Selective, Surrender, and Successful.

Point number one tells us in order to be blessed, we have to be selective in who we receive counsel from, who we consider friends, and to be sure we share the same views when it comes to our God. It’s important to surround ourselves with people who can encourage us with scripture and help us along our paths. We have to continue to connect with unsaved people to help them learn of Christ, but we have to be sure we’re pouring into them and not the other way around. Remember, iron sharpens iron. Make sure the people we allow around us are lifting us up and not pulling us down.

Birds of a feather…

Show Them

And when all the people saw it, they fell face down on the ground and cried out, ‘The LORD—He is God! Yes, the LORD is God!’
— 1 KINGS 18:39 (NLT)

There is only one true God. The God we serve is Lord of heaven and earth, creator of the universe and all within it. (Bless His Holy name!) Unfortunately, people today are in search of something to believe in and end up making false gods to pledge their lives to. This is where you and I have to show them the Lord is God. We do this by our testimony. We show them in our godly walk of faith, service, humility, and above all, love. When the world witnesses the goodness of our God they will have no choice but to join in worship with us. We only have to show them our Lord. And you know what? They’re ready to see Him.
