Season the Conversation

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
— COLOSSIANS 4:5 – 6 (NIV)

Have you ever spoken to someone who just sucks the life out of you? They find ways to complain about everything! In December it’s too cold. In July it’s too hot. They aren’t offering enough overtime at work. They complain about what people say, how they say it and who they say it to. They complain about everything from the choir’s choice of songs to the length of the pastor’s sermon. Before you know it, you’re nodding your head in agreement just to get the conversation over with quicker. But don’t fall into complaining or agreeing with them. Instead, add some season to the conversation.

As an ambassador for Christ, help others find ways to see God in everything. It’s no sense in complaining about what you cannot control, but in everything, you can find reason to praise God. “Yeah, it’s pretty cold today, but thank God for letting us see another day” or “Pastor did go a little longer today, but what he said really helped me.” Let your conversation always be full of grace. Be ready to share the light of Christ when others speak darkness. They way you respond, or answer people, can influence their lives. Make the choice to influence them in a positive way. In a godly way. After all, life and death are in the power of the tongue. Choose life.

Heavenly Father, I will be wise in the way I act toward others and make the most of every opportunity for them to see You. My conversations will be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that I may know how to answer everyone godly. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
