“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”
I took swimming lessons at our local YMCA in Detroit when I was in elementary. Because of my fear of drowning, I didn’t want to learn how to swim, but it was one of those things the parents made me do. The instructor warned me to stay away from the deep end, but everything looked like the deep end to me. He said, “You may choke trying to breath underwater. Water will go up your nose and may burn your eyes, but I won’t let you drown.” He got into the water with me, grabbed both of my hands, told me to stretch out and flutter kick. Long story short, I learned to swim – I didn’t drown.

My friend, God wants you to stretch out and live life, blessed – with no fear, knowing that He’s got you. You’re going to pass through some waters in life – you may choke, it may make you uncomfortable or cause your eyes to burn with tears – but they won’t sweep over you. When you walk through the hard, fiery times of life, you won’t get burned. Why? Because God is in the water with you. Because Jesus is in the fire with you. He not only has you by both hands, but in His hand, fully protected. The enemy may try to drown you, but he will fail. He may try to set you ablaze, but he will fail. You are covered by the blood of Christ and whatever you’re going through, God’s in there with you.
