It's My Prerogative

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 CORINTHIANS 10:31 (NIV)

Back in 1988, R&B Legend, Bobby Brown, had a number one song on the Billboard Charts titled, “My Prerogative.”  In the song he talks about how he can do what he wants to do with his life regardless of how everybody’s talking all this stuff about him. He responds by asking a rhetorical question: “Why don’t they just let me live?” Bobby Brown goes on to let them everyone know that he doesn’t need permission and that he makes his own decisions and sums up this notion by stating, “It’s my prerogative.” He wanted the world to know he could be as nasty as he wanted to be, get girls and do whatever he wanted with his life because he didn’t care what people thought. He wanted to be left alone to live the life he wanted.

Don’t get me wrong, it was a good song. I had the “Don’t Be Cruel” album and know all the lyrics to “My Prerogative,” but I also know the difference between entertainment and glorifying God. As believers, we can’t live any kind of life. We must live according to the commandments of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul makes it very plain for us. He said, “Whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” How often do we ask ourselves, “Is what I’m about to say pleasing to God?” or “If I do this, will God get the glory?” These are choices we make every day, and we’re totally in control of them. Make the decision today that whatever you do, to do it all for the glory of God and watch doors open when we live life the way God intended and not according to our prerogatives.

Heavenly Father, in everything I do, I will honor You. I want every little step I take to bring You glory. I will live according to Your commandments and not my own desires. Whatever I do, will glorify You, Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
