Self-Care

The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.’
— MARK 12:31 (NLT)

Today, I want to encourage you to take some time and think about you for a change. You spend most of your day thinking about your family, ministry, work, relationships, politics and how to make the world a better place, but have you thought about you for a second. You may think, “Well Van, that’s not very godly. Sounds selfish to think about myself.” You couldn’t be more wrong. How can you give to your family, ministry, work and relationships what you don’t have for yourself?

It’s important to God that you love others as you love yourself. That means you have to love you, before you can love someone else. You have to like you, get to know you and take care of you. When you love you, God will make family, ministry, work and your relationships align. Matthew 6:33 says to seek God first. Well, God is love. So, seek love. And it starts with loving yourself, so you can love others with the love of Christ. Treat yourself by meditating, reading a book on a topic you like, exercise, call a friend you haven’t connected with for being so busy or just stop and be still. Self-care by spending some time with you and Jesus.

You matter!

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me for who I am and what You created me to be. I love me and the work You are doing in me. I matter to You and I matter to me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
