Do the Word

The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
— PHILIPPIANS 4:9 (NKJV)

While studying today’s scripture using my Life Application Study Bible, I came across a study note that really helped me. It read:

It’s not enough to hear or read the Word of God, or even to know it well. We must also put it into practice. How easy is it to listen to a sermon and forget what the preacher said? How easy it is to read the Bible and not think about how to live differently? How easy it is to debate what a passage means and not live out that meaning? Exposure to God’s Word is not enough. It must lead to obedience.

I must admit at times I read scripture looking for what I can get from it – not what I can do. The fact of the matter is I can only receive God’s precious promises when I commit to doing the Word of God that I have learned, received and heard. After I hear a great sermon preached, I should look for ways to apply what I just heard. After studying and praying, I should think about how I’m going to put into practice what was revealed to me. Our God is a God of action and as His followers we must be about action as well. Want peace? Do the Word. Want a breakthrough? Do the Word. Healing? Do the Word. Forgiveness? Do the Word. Everything you ever needed and wanted is in God’s Word. What are you willing to do to receive it?
