Have the Talk

Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.
— TITUS 2:2 – 3 (NIV)

My daughter is dual enrolled through her high school at our local community college. I decided to enroll too and take the course with her. On the way to class I asked her if she knew what the bible said about homosexuality? She said she heard some things, but wasn’t sure. So, we had the talk. I explained to her what scripture says about sin and how Jesus loves everyone and so should we. As I continued to answer her questions, she asked, “Dad? Why this talk now?” I simply said, “Because it is my responsibility that you know what the bible says before someone else tells you otherwise.”

My friend. Today I want to encourage you to have what may be an uncomfortable or difficult conversations with your children. (If you don’t have children, have the talk with your nephews, nieces, God-children, best friend’s kids, kids around the corner, somebody’s child you know.) If you don’t, chances are someone else will and you may not agree with what they tell them. It’s not the church’s job, the school’s job, grandma’s job or anyone else’s. Those people (hopefully) will just reinforce what you’ve already taught them. Don’t leave anything to chance. Don’t wonder if they know about God and His word. Have the talk today and train them up in the way they should go.

Don’t wait

Heavenly Father, thank You for trusting me to train up the child(ren) You have placed in my life. I will teach them what Your word says over what the world says. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
