Budge the Grudge

But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven.
— MATTHEW 5:44 – 45a (NIV)

I always thought it was easier to dismiss my enemies from my life. If someone did anything wrong by me, I didn’t forgive them. What I would do is write them out of my life. I’d keep a mental list of people who I considered enemies, people that couldn’t ask me for anything and/or people I didn’t talk to and avoided. I thought keeping this mental list would keep my life drama free, give me a sense of freedom and create a persona for others to know not to mess with me. It had the opposite effect.

Remembering what people did to me was more stressful than forgiving them and moving on with my life. God will not help you hold a grudge, but Jesus will help you love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. When you love your enemy, they aren’t getting away with whatever they tried to do to you. Loving them is for you, not them. Loving your enemy releases a freedom you can only experience as a child of your Father in heaven. Praying for those who persecute you unlocks blessings over your life you had no idea existed. So give that grudge a budge that you’ve been holding on to for years and allow God to move in your life.
