Beyond the Word Love

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails…
— 1 CORINTHIANS 13:4 – 8a (NIV)

What is love? I’m sure everyone has their own answers. Some will say, “Love is God” while others may say, “It’s a funny feeling you get when you’re close to someone.” The word love has been used and abused to the point that it has lost it’s value and power. We use it to describe how we feel about cars and the shoes that perfectly match an outfit, rather than an action word that can change the universe.

To go beyond the word love, you have to know who God is. When you know God, you will know love. When you love God, you will not only know what love is, but you will know what love is not. You will believe that love is capable of conquering all once you understand love never fails, is patient and is kind. You won’t invest in loving inanimate objects that cannot love you back when you acknowledge that love does not envy or boast or is not proud. You’ll be more compassionate with others when you practice a love that does not dishonor others, seek itself, become easily angered or keeps no record of wrongs. Love rejoices in the truth, not evil. It protects, trust, hopes and always perseveres. Find real love in Jesus and then spread it freely among people as it was freely given to you.

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing me what love is by first loving me. I will love others, and not things, with the love You have given me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
