Whatever He Says

His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever He tells you.’
— JOHN 2:5 (NIV)

In the book of John, at the beginning of chapter two, John captures one of Jesus’ first miracles. He was at a wedding that took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother, Mary, and His disciples were there. At a point when the wine ran out, Mary said to Jesus, “They have no more wine.” And Jesus was like, “It ain’t my fault!” (Just paraphrasing. He really said, “Woman, why do you involve me? My hour has not yet come.”) Mary knew what Jesus was able to do, so she told the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.” And you know the rest of the story. Jesus turned water into wine and they kept the party going.

Sometimes we get ourselves into trouble by the things we choose to say or do. And although it is no fault of Christ, we turn to Him for His help. Yes, Jesus will fix it and make all things new, but we may not know exactly how He will, or what He will do. Our job is not to understand or even make sense of it. Our job is to have faith and do whatever He says. It’s not His fault we’re in the mess we are. It’s not His fault we spent too money last weekend. It’s not His fault we thought they were cute even though red flags were all around. Nope! But if we want Jesus to turn our water into wine, we have to be willing to do whatever He says.

Just do it!

Heavenly Father, it’s me again. Please forgive me. I messed up and I know that only You can fix it and make all things new. I will do whatever You tell me. Thank You for hearing my prayer. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
