That's What We Are

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.
— 1 JOHN 3:1 (NIV)

There aren’t too many places I can go in Detroit that I’m not known. It’s not because of anything I have done, no. It’s because of the notoriety and work my mother has put in throughout the city. If I walk into the mayor’s office unannounced, I’d probably be thrown out or arrested, but if I say, “I’m Shirley Burch’s son” I’d be treated much differently. If I walked into one of the many supermarket chains she represents, the owners would smile, take me into their office and welcome me as if they were welcoming my mother. The reason this special treatment is afforded me is not because of anything I have done, but because of whom my mother is, and it is up to me to claim I am her son to receive it.

We all are able to go places we aren’t known and receive special treatment, blessings and grace. If not, it’s definitely not because we haven’t received the great love the Father has lavished on us, but because the world does not know God and therefore are not capable of knowing what we are. What are we? We are children of God! That’s what we are! And it’s up to us to claim our heritage. Just because the world doesn’t know what we are doesn’t change who we are in Christ. We don’t have to accept the current conditions of our lives, households, communities or world. We don’t have to be stressed in our relationships, on our jobs, or in our organizations. We are of God. We have His power. We are more than conquerors. We have been blessed with every spiritual blessing. We are the head and not the tail. We are above only and never beneath. We are the children of God! That’s what we are. And if they don’t know it, tell them!

Now they know!

Heavenly Father, thank You for the great love You have lavished on me. I am Your child and I will let the world know it so that they will know You! Nothing is impossible for me with You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
