Know It By Heart

These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.
— DEUTERONOMY 6:6 (NIV)

The human brain is amazing. You can commit things to memory, with very little effort, and through repetition. You sing your favorite song, word for word, as you drive to work, without studying the lyrics or rehearsal. You can navigate your way from your bedroom to the bathroom in the dark, because you’ve done it so many times. I still remember my grandparent’s phone number and I haven’t dialed it in years! Often, the ability to commit things to memory is referred to as knowing it by heart. I suggest this is what God meant in today’s scripture.

God wants His commandments to be on your heart at all times and it helps if you know them by heart. That way, when evil approaches, you don’t have to wonder how to respond. If it’s in your heart, the response is automatic. And don’t be discouraged if you don’t know all of them today. Start with one at a time. Once you learn to obey and depend on it, God will show you the next one to learn and live by. Doesn’t matter if you grew up in church or if you just decided today to do right by Christ. The important thing is that you start today. Once you begin to fill your heart with the light of Jesus, the darkness will be forced out. Charge yourself today to know God’s word by heart.

Heavenly Father, I choose to fill my heart with Your Holy Word. The commandments that you gave to me will be on my heart always through my meditation, study and prayer. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
