A Helping Hand

Then Peter said, ‘Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.’ Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong.
— ACTS 3:6 – 7 (NIV)

Today’s scripture tells of the apostles Peter and John encounter with a lame man. They were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon – when they encounter the man who was lame from birth. He was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. Then Peter said, ‘Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.’ Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve overlooked and avoided people asking for money on the street, but in the scripture, Peter tells the lame man to look at them. He wanted the lame man to take his attention from his current situation (and the money he thought he needed), so he could fully accept the blessing Christ wanted him to have through them. God has equipped you with a gift to share with people more powerful than silver and gold. This week, take time to pray with someone who needs it. Maybe share your testimony or listen to someone else’s. A helping hand can come in many different forms other than just silver and gold. So the next time you encounter someone in need, don’t think you don’t have anything of value to offer them.

Your gift is priceless

Heavenly Father, thank You for blessing me to bless others. You have gifted me to be a gift to others. I will not overlook Your people, but have them look at me to see You in me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
