What's In The Way?

He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see Him, since Jesus was coming that way.
— LUKE 19:3 – 4 (NIV)

In today’s scripture, Jesus is entering Jericho and passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see Him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, He looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed Him gladly.

What’s hindering you from seeing Jesus today? Are you working too much overtime? Are your kids after school events? Are you harboring unforgiveness in your heart or holding on to a multi-year grudge? What’s in the way of Jesus speaking directly to you? Whatever it is, get rid of it today! And just like Zacchaeus climbed a sycamore to see Jesus, you too may have to do something you may not normally do or something uncomfortable. Turn down overtime on Sunday every once in a while so you and your family can go to church and worship together. Forgive and let go of the grudge you’ve been holding for years. Jesus wants to call you by name and bless you, but first you have to get rid of what’s in the way.

Heavenly Father, bless me with the wisdom and courage to get rid of what’s in the way of me seeing Your face. I want to hear You call my name and come into my heart to stay. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
