Be True To Yourself

To the Jews who had believed Him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to My teaching, you are really My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’
— JOHN 8:31 – 32 (NIV)

Over the weekend, I was exposed to a soundbite from an interview with the late great Maya Angelou. George Stroumboulopoulos conducted this interview in 2013 when he asked the legendary literary icon what advice would she give to this generation? No matter the answer, I knew it was going to be profound, life altering and wonderfully scripted. She can say anything and make it sound good! However, Maya Angelou kept her response to this question short and succinct, which made it exceed my expectations all the more. Her response was, “Tell the truth, to yourself first, and to the children.” (Click HERE for full interview.)

Jesus said if we hold to His teaching, we are really His disciples and then we will know the truth and the truth will set us free. If knowing the truth frees us, why does sin still keep us in bondage? Maybe the chains of sin are keeping us enslaved because we aren’t being true to ourselves. If we have a weakness to drink and smoke, don’t lie to ourselves, steer clear of those that are doing it. If we can’t say no to premarital sex or sexual immorality, be true to ourselves and don’t enter into those predicaments. Hold to Jesus’ teachings. Love one another as ourselves. Pray for those that despitefully use us. Bless them that curse us. Let no evil come from our mouths. Tell the truth. Live the truth. Be the truth.

Set yourself free

Heavenly Father, I will no longer allow sin to enslave me. I will hold to Your teachings and set myself free by knowing the truth. I will be true to myself, tell the truth, live the truth and be the truth. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
