How To Love Your Enemies

But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
— MATTHEW 12:44 (NIV)

How do you love someone you can’t stand? People who you know mean you no good. People that talk about you as soon as you leave the room. Someone that has hurt you and never apologized. Someone that has hurt you and doesn’t care. People that have stolen from you, put you down, deserted you when you needed them, wrongfully accused you, lied on you and other despiteful things. And, not only does Jesus say to love these people, but to pray for them too! How Jesus?!

Well, the best way to love your enemies is the same way you love your loved ones. Love does not always have to be affectionate or intimate, but love does have to be a conscious choice. For example, think about the way you love your best friend. You think about them. You pray for them. You consider their feelings. You show you care about them. You forgive them. You sacrifice for them. You want what’s best for them. This is the same way Christ wants you to love your enemy. It may not be easy at times, but Jesus will never ask you to do the impossible. Plus, He’s given you great footsteps to follow in.

With Jesus it’s possible

Heavenly Father, thank You for the example You’ve given me in loving my enemies and praying for those who persecute me. I will make the choice to love my enemy, and in doing so, grow closer in You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
