A Whole Lot of Worrying

My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me.
— PSALM 31:15 (NIV)

When we think about our enemies, we often think of a who and not a what. I suggest it’s because it is easier to think of a who as an enemy because we can visualize that bully from the fifth grade that we still don’t like or that gossiper who just keeps up mess.  We even associate debt with a who! “I have to pay the credit card man this Friday.” This sort of thinking can misplace our prayers and meditation when they’re pointed toward the who instead of the what. This can cause a whole lot of worrying on our part!

Your true enemy isn’t the who. Your true enemy is the what. Your enemy is sickness. Your enemy is debt. Your enemy is racism and unemployment. Your enemy is lawlessness and wretchedness. True, these whats can have a face, but remember, your battle isn’t against flesh and blood. When your focus is the symptom (who) instead of the disease (what) you allow yourself to do a whole lot of worrying. But when you recognize the what isn’t bigger than your God, you’ll realize you’ve already been delivered from the enemy. The what that is pursing you and trying to destroy your life has already been defeated. Don’t waste time doing a whole lot of worrying. That’s taking up your valuable prayer time!

My God is awesome!
