“He must increase, but I must decrease.”
Yesterday we celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. He was a civil rights leader who sacrificed his life for people to be considered equal all over the world. When I read or see video clips of him delivering speeches and marching, I often forget how young of a man he was. He was only 39 years old when he was assassinated. (Today he would be 90.) He was only 25 when he became the most visible spokesperson and leader of the movement. I’m sure he wanted to vacation with his family. I’m sure he wanted date night with his wife. I’m sure he wanted to kick back with friends and watch a movie, but that wasn’t the life God predestined for Dr. King. He had something bigger planned.

In order to live the life God predestined for you, your wants and desires must decrease so that Christ can increase. The life Jesus wants for you is bigger than you. It’s bigger than your plans. It’s bigger than your comfort. it’s bigger than your wants. And if you decrease your agenda, while allowing God’s agenda to increase in you, you’ll find you have everything you need. You’ll find strength when you’re weak. You’ll find hope when all is lost. You’ll find love in the midst of hate. You’ll find peace during your storm. What God has for you is bigger than you. Rely on the omnipotence of God and allow Him to increase in your life.
