Pat on the Back

But, ‘Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.’ For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
— 2 CORINTHIANS 10:17 – 18 (NIV)

“First giving honor to God, who is the head of my life.  To the pastor, first lady, all the associate ministers, deacons, mothers, missionaries, saints, members & friends…”

I’m guessing that’s not the first time you’ve heard that. That’s the “testimony-second service announcement-guest welcome-I’m about to get up in church and say something” etiquette/protocol before saying who you are and why you have the microphone. It’s become somewhat of an old practice now, but every once in a while, you may still here it. But what it does is important. It gives order, perspective and in most cases encourages humility.

In the above introduction, the speaker does not mention himself or herself until last – if at all. GOD is reverenced first and then all others. When you internalize this mindset, your actions become that of a humble servant - one who doesn’t boast about themselves, but one who boasts in the Lord. Make it a point to thank Jesus in everything you do instead of “Look at me” or “I did that.” Don’t be quick to look for others to praise you for what you did or to give yourself a pat on the back, but rather ask yourself if what you did pleases GOD. For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.

GOD did it, not me!

Heavenly Father, I will boast in You, for without You I can do nothing. I will not commend myself, but seek Your approval in all things. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
