Streetlights

If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.
— JAMES 4:17 (NIV)

Growing up, I had lots of rules. One that comes to mind is how my summer playtime was governed by the city’s schedule of when to activate its streetlights to illuminate our neighborhood. Once the streetlight was on, that meant it was time for me to report home for the evening. Some kids I played with didn’t have this rule. I was teased for having to go home while they continued to play. I worked up the nerve to ask my mother why did I have to come in and the other kids didn’t? She said, “Because I’m not their mother. I’m your mother!”

I’m sure there are times you’ve witnessed someone seek revenge, curse someone out that had it coming or behave irresponsibly and thought, “I wish I could do that!” but ask yourself, “Is their GOD your GOD?” Because of who your Father is, there are some things you can’t do that you may see others doing. Regardless of what others are doing, you’ve been taught to do good. Remember that there is a way that seems right to man, but in the end, it leads to death. So, don’t worry about what everyone else is doing or seems to be getting away with. Continue to do the good your Heavenly Father taught you and watch the blessings overtake you! (That streetlight rule kept me out of a lot of trouble.)

Your streetlight is on!

Heavenly Father, I will continue to do the good You have taught me and showed me. Continue to light my path, Lord, and reveal Your righteousness to me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
