Use Responsibly

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.
— JAMES 3:9, 10 (NIV)

We always have a choice in the words we choose to use. We can use words to build and esteem or words to destroy and discourage. We have words that can promote love and spark ideas, but we also know words that breed hatred and cause division.

You have control over the things that come from your mouth. Make the choice to use your tongue responsibly. Sure, you have your temper to manage and you have emotions that can make you quite emotional, but the same tongue you use to sing Sunday Morning Hymns should not be the same instrument you use to curse your loved one, friend, enemy or co-worker Monday morning. You’re not perfect, but you can strive to be perfect at getting better and improving each day on your walk with Christ. Erase one “bad word” from your vocabulary every week and choose not to use that word again. Challenge a friend or family member to join you. God entrusted you with a powerful tool when He gave you your tongue. Use it responsibly and bless someone today.

Heavenly Father, I will use my tongue to praise You and not curse others. I will practice self-control and not allow cursing to come out of the same mouth I praise You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
