Forgive and Forget

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
— COLOSSIANS 3:13 (NIV)

We’ve heard of funny sayings Christians have to give a false sense of obedience to God’s Word. Like, when people say, “I love you, but I don’t have to like you?” What scripture backs that idea up? What about when people say, “I have to forgive you, but I don’t have to forget?” What gospel is that found in? What if God treated us like that? God says He blotted out our transgressions and chose not to remember our sins (Isaiah 43:25). And, as a matter of fact, Christ says the exact opposite in Hebrews 8:12, “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

I’m not going to give you the whole spill “forgiveness isn’t for them, it’s for you” thing. You already know that. What I want to give you is encouragement in an area that I also need help with… forgetting! I’ve “forgiven” several people, but when I see them… let’s just say, it’s a different story. If you’ve forgiven someone, and have chosen to move forward, you shouldn’t bring up what they did in the past. No one wins in that situation. Instead, remember the compassion and love Christ extended to you when He forgave and restored you. God doesn’t go around reminding you what you did in 2015. No, He threw it into the sea of forgetfulness. Jesus doesn’t bring up what you did last month when you ask for a blessing today. No, He forgot about it. And for some of us, it’s time we forgot about it too.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your compassionate example. I choose to forgive and forget the sin and transgressions of others toward me. I will forgive as You have forgiven me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
