What Is Love?

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
— JOHN 3:16 (NIV)

Is love a box of chocolates? Is love never having to say you’re sorry? Is love remembering every significant event in your loved ones life? Hallmark would have you believe Valentine’s Day and other corporate grab cash days are ways to show love to others, but God shows us His love through sacrifice and giving consistently.

God shows His love for you daily through the sacrifice of His only Son, Jesus. He loved you so much that He gave you what you needed even if it hurt Him to sacrifice Christ in the process. Today, you may have to give your children love by giving them life-lessons they need to be respectful and responsible, instead of trying to be their friend. Today, you may have to give your spouse godly counsel, instead of allowing them to be satisfied and complacent with the status quo. Today, you may have to tell your best friend the path they’re taking will lead to destruction, instead of clicking “Like” on their depressing Facebook status. Love isn’t always chocolate covered strawberries and flowers. Sometimes love is giving someone what they need to become better even though it may hurt you.

Give until it hurts

Heavenly Father, You loved me so much that You gave me Your Son, Jesus, who was very valuable to you. Thank You for Your sacrifice toward me. Give me the strength I need to sacrifice my comfort level and love others as You have loved me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
