INFLUENCE

Even from your own number, men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.
— ACTS 20:30 (NIV)

Influences are all around us. Influences can serve as the extra push to do right in life or make necessary changes for ourselves. Influences aren’t always negative, but make no mistake about the fact that bad influences do exist – because they do. And the tricky thing about bad influences are they often come from people closest to us.

God has a plan for your life and it’s really important that you know it for yourself and understand how you’re going to accomplish it. It’s equally important that you make sure you are continually praying and studying God’s Word. Why? Because you need to know it for yourself so that if anyone tries to influence you, distort your truth, or pull you away from God’s command, red flags need to go off. Strive to know Word like you know your own name. If someone calls you by another name, or even mispronounces it, you correct them, because you know your name, right? Likewise, should anyone influence you contrary to being a disciple of Christ, red flags should go off as you say, “That’s not my name!” Yes, I need to be in church Sunday. No, I’m not poisoning my body anymore. Yes, I’m tithing. No, I’m not cussing her out even though she probably deserves it. Yes, I’m going to bible study this week. If it’s your truths and God’s plan for you, allow no one to distort them, but use your influence to win them over for Christ!

God’s plan. My plan.

Heavenly Father, I am aware that influences will arise about me and try to distort Your truths in order to draw me away from Your plan for me, but no weapon formed against me shall prosper. I belong to You, I know Your truth through Your Word, and I will follow You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
