Lessons of Listening

‘For they have not listened to my words,’ declares the LORD, ‘words that I sent to them again and again by my servants the prophets. And you exiles have not listened either,’ declares the LORD.
— JEREMIAH 29:19 (NIV)

As a child, I had a hard time listening to my parents, adults, and generally people in authority. (Well, if I’m honest with myself, I still have that problem now at times!) I thought I knew it all, so I couldn’t be told nothing. Sometimes things worked out by the grace of God, while other times… well, let’s just say a hard head makes a soft behind! I’ve learned the hard way that it’s best to listen to those who love you, want the best for you, and have the knowledge, wisdom, and experience in the aspect of life you’re newly embarking upon.

These people who love you, want the best for you, and are willing to share their knowledge, wisdom, and experience, have been sent by God to give you godly direction, advice, and encouragement. Listen. Sometimes, you will hear the same words from your family members, friends, a talk show, then during a sermon on Sunday. That’s not a coincident. That’s God. Listen. We are all jointly fit together, and God can use whomever He wants to get His message to you. Listen. If what you’re trying in life isn’t working out for you, whether it be relationships, employment, trying to lose weight, or whatever, chances are God has already provided you with the solution again and again and again. Listen.
