Milk Does a Spirit Good

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.
— 1 PETER 2:2 (NIV)

When a baby is born, it cries for many reasons. One common reason a baby cries is it's hungry. People believe that a baby craves milk, but that’s because we’re trained to think that. The truth is, a baby will drink whatever it is initially given. We, as responsible parents, feed our babies milk knowing the benefits of milk. Unlike water or juice, milk, namely from the baby’s mother, has everything a baby needs for easy digestion, brain development, healthy growth, and protection from illness. When a baby is given anything other than milk, it may survive, but its growth will be hindered.

As a believer, you too need spiritual milk. When you allow any other substance to take the place of your spiritual milk, you run the risk of hindering your growth. When television consumes more of your appetite than studying God’s word; when social media ruins your taste buds from inspirational commentary with Christ; when the world’s menu appears more tasty than the buffet Jesus has prepared for you, the Holy Spirit inside you experiences spiritual starvation and ultimately stunts your growth. You start thinking like your community instead of changing it. You start believing in mess instead of in miracles. Your mind becomes chained instead of being able to break them. Give your spirit what it needs so you can grow and become what God and our world needs. Pray without cease. Study to show yourself approved. Let this mind be in you that is in Christ Jesus. Drink your spiritual milk so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.

Heavenly Father, I will not starve my spirit from Your word. I will drink my spiritual milk so that by it I will grow up in my salvation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
