A Mother's Love

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother … Jesus saw His mother there…
— John 19:25 – 26 (NIV)

William Makepeace Thackeray said, “Mother is the name for God in the lips and hearts of little children.”

When I was a child and needed comfort, I knew I could always count on mom. When I needed that extra word of encouragement, she always knew what to say. Even during the numerous times I got myself into trouble and had no one else to turn to, I could look for her, and she’d be there.

As a child, “mom” was the name for God until I could know God for myself. She provided an unselfish, God-like love and met my every need. I had done nothing to deserve this unconditional love, but it was her way of training me to know when I needed comfort or encouragement and she was not near, I could run to my Father. I became familiar with God’s love because I first experienced it through my mother’s love.
