Count to Ten

An angry person stirs up conflict, and a hot-tempered person commits many sins.
— PROVERBS 29:22 (NIV)

Slow down. Think about what you’re about to say. Do you really mean it? Is it because you’re angry? Maybe you should count to ten and take some deep breaths before you respond to that email, that post, or that text or just walk away…

When you find yourself angry, take the time to have a similar conversation within your spirit. Your emotions can get the best of you and cause you to say or do things you may not really mean, but it comes a time when that can no longer be an excuse. When you’re aware of your emotional state, you can make better decisions with how you react. It comes with using self-control and caring enough to practice how we represent Christ through our interactions with others. I find counting to ten in my head (or sometimes aloud) to help calm me and realize whatever is upsetting me is not a matter of life or death. It gives me time to remember Jesus went through more than what I’m allowing to anger me. I chant, “Get it together, Van. You’re better than this.” As followers of Christ, make sure your reactions produce love and peace, not stir up conflict or sin.

Stay calm

Heavenly Father, I am not an angry person or hot-tempered one. I am able to control my emotions and represent You as I should. I will not participate in stirring up conflict or sin. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
