You Don't Know

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
— 2 CORINTHIANS 1:3, 4 (NIV)

You don’t know their story. You don’t know what they went through this morning. You don’t know what happened last night. You don’t know where they’ve been. You don’t know where they’re going. You don’t know what’s waiting for them at home. You don’t know where they go when they leave. You don’t know that they cry when they’re alone. You don’t know what happened to them as a child. You don’t know what happened to them yesterday. You just never know.

And you may never know exactly what a person experiences, but you can still be compassionate and comfort others with the comfort you’ve received from God. You don’t have to know a person’s business to be kind or show them Christ’s love. Acknowledge people that others often pass by. Ask someone how they’re doing who may not respond with, “I’m doing fine.” A simple expression of love or showing you care may go a long way, but you’ll never know until you try.
