A Whole Lot of Talk

"The Lord's Prayer" Series - Day 2

And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
— Matthew 6:7 (NIV)

As an engineering student, I was required to take a critical writing class. As the instructor of this course, Dr. Swartz’s objective was to teach how to write effectively mostly by the removal of “fluff.” Fluff are words that are unnecessary and don’t add any meaning or true value to the message you’re trying to convey. It may seem harsh to some, but the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) acronym was a constant reminder in achieving this goal of writing effectively.

When you pray to God, make sure you don’t babble and remove the fluff from your request. I find the most effective way to do this is to pray His scripture. Find a scripture that supports your prayer request and pray it without adding fluff to it. If your request is for peace your prayer from Isaiah 26:3 may sound like, “Father, You said if I kept my mind stayed on You, You’d keep me in perfect peace.” If your request is for direction your prayer from Proverbs 3:5-6 may sound like, “Lord, You said if I trust in You with all my heart, lean not to my own understanding, and acknowledge You in all my ways, You would direct my path.” Try using scripture today and removing fluff to make your prayer more effective.

Make your request known

Lord, I thank You instructing me in how to pray to You. I will not babble or use many words knowing You will hear my request when I pray Your word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
