“When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, ‘You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?’”
I have discovered that it’s really easy to be judgmental while watching others try to navigate life. I can pinpoint their mistakes because I’m on the outside looking in. I can recall saying things like, “They ought to know better by now!” or “I wouldn’t do that if I were them.” I had to catch myself more than a few times from crossing over into “Holier-Than-Thou” territory. The truth of the matter is I, myself, have made plenty of mistakes and had to stop and ask myself, “Who am I to hold others to a higher standard than myself?”

I can’t hold people to a godly standard that I don’t exemplify. I have discovered that I have to lead by example. And even when I reach the mark of the high calling I’m pressing toward, it still doesn’t give me the right to look down on others. Instead, I should reach back and help others to walk closer with Christ. Now, I’m not talking about forcing others to change. I’m talking about living a godly example as a witness for Christ so that people can learn to see God for themselves through me. The only way I can change people, or my community, is to lead by example. If I lift the name of Jesus, He’ll do all the rest.

“Heavenly Father, You did not call me to judge others, but to lead Your people to You. I will be the example that You have called me to be so that all may see You through me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
