Show Up

Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
— 1 CORINTHIANS 12:29 – 30 (NIV)

During open gym basketball at our church, I taught a lesson on the importance each person has in the body of Christ. I talked about how everyone has a gift, talent to support that gift, and how each person is needed in the body of Christ. I gave each person a pencil and paper to write down what their gift is and how it is important to the body. Each person looked back at me confused, because the pencils I passed out weren’t sharpened. One person mustered up the courage to ask, “Deacon Burch. How are we gonna write with unsharpened pencils?” I replied, “The person with the pencil sharpener didn’t show up.”

You may not be an apostle. You may not be a prophet. You may not speak in tongues. But you do have a gift that God has given you to be a blessing in the body of Christ. The body needs your gift, but you will never know just how much until you show up. Your gift isn’t small. It isn’t insignificant or less important than someone else’s. It’s just what’s needed today to solve tomorrow’s problem. Someone is waiting for you to respond to the purpose God has given you. You are the change your church and community have been waiting for. If you aren’t sure what your gift is, that’s OK. All you have to do is show up and allow Jesus to show you.

You are needed!

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift You have blessed me with. I will use it to please You and fulfill the purpose You have predestined to me. I am important to You. I am needed in Your body. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
