Praising and Cursing

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.
— JAMES 3:9 – 10 (NIV)

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m guilty. I’m not ashamed to tell you because in sharing it is my hope that we can help each other. Iron sharpens iron, right? This week, already, I’ve been tested twice at work and I failed miserably. Two of my co-workers, on separate days, were able to push the right buttons to get the wrong reactions out of me. Now, keep in mind, I kept it professional. I didn’t straight up curse them out, but I did let them have “it” and hopefully, they will think twice if there is a next time. What saddened me was some of my colleagues heard me going in on my co-workers and applauded me for putting them in their place. My colleague left feeling bad after our talk, but I felt good. And for me, the fact that we both didn’t feel good after I checked them, was an indication that what I did wasn’t godly and even worse, others praised me for it.

“Van! Your co-worker needed to be put in check and cursed out! They shouldn’t feel good after testing you!” I hear you and I felt the same way. If I’m honest with you, I still feel that way, but I can’t curse out human beings with the same tongue I praise our Lord and Father with. Yes, I should have told my co-worker how they wronged me and how I felt, but I should have also told them that I forgive them. Plus, I was too ready to let them have it. That makes me question what was in my spirit and do a little inventory of myself. So, I hope my little testimony helps you do more praising and less cursing. After all my brothers and sisters, this should not be.

Be the example…

Heavenly Father, I promise to do better when it comes to how I treat those who have been made in Your likeness. I can’t praise You and curse others with the same tongue. Please forgive me father and cleanse me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
