Don't Get Caught Sleeping

‘Why are you sleeping?’ He asked them. ‘Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.’
— LUKE 22:46 (NIV)

They say you shouldn’t drive while you’re sleepy. They also say that you should get plenty of rest before a big test or a full day of work. When you’re not alert chances are you’re going to make a mistake. You’re going to make some type-o’s, not notice the car braking ahead of you, or not be able to recall what you studied the night before. One of the great Hip Hop lyricist of our time, Nas, once said that “Sleep is the cousin of death,” because while you’re asleep when you should be awake grinding, you’re not aware of the opportunities all around you or what blessings are passing you by.

Our spirits can be the same way. With a sleeping spirit, you’re more inclined to fall into temptation. That’s why Jesus warned His disciples not to sleep, but to get up and pray. With a prayerful spirit you’re alert and aware of the temptations that await you. With a sleeping spirit, you will give into the temptation of cussing your deserving co-worker out, while a prayerful spirit will encourage you to pray for them. With a sleeping spirit that tight dress or ripping muscles may arrest your attention a little too long, while a prayerful spirit will remind you what you have at home. Don’t get caught sleeping. Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.

Heavenly Father, I pledge to have a prayerful spirit and not a sleeping spirit that will cause me to fall into temptation. Strengthen me, Lord. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
