Restore Gently

Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.
— GALATIANS 6:1 (NIV)

How should we deal with a person that has sinned? Does the sin committed determine our action or their punishment? Are there levels of sin? Is the punishment justified? Stoning? Scarlet letter? Ostracize them? Public shaming? Finger pointing? At any given time, we witness the punitive vengeance of our unforgiving society, but as believers and followers of Christ, what stand should we take?

My brother or sister in Christ, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. This is the time when your help is needed most. This person needs a friend and not good church folk to be afraid that their sin is contagious or will prevent them from climbing the Christian ladder of success by their association. Help your brother or sister understand their sin and help them turn from it, instead of ostracizing them, disowning them, and voiding the mercy God has shown you. God has not dismissed them for their sin. Jesus still loves them, wants them, and is ready to forgive them. He still has a plan for their life. Your help in restoring them gently could make all the difference and impact the growth of God’s Kingdom as well as the furthering of the Gospel.

Heavenly Father, I live by Your Spirit and am prepared to restore my brother or sister gently if they are caught in sin. I will watch myself so not to be tempted, but greater are You that’s in me, than he that’s in the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
