Your Turn

‘You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.’
— JONH 13:13 – 14 (NIV)

In today’s scripture, Jesus washes the feet of His disciples. This is significant for three reasons. For Jesus, it was the display of His humility and His servanthood. For the disciples, the washing of their feet was in direct contrast to their heart attitudes at that time. For us, washing feet is symbolic of our role in the body of Christ.

Today, you can’t walk around with a basin of water and a towel around your waist washing feet to display your humility and servanthood. (Well, you could, but it would be a little out of place and you may even get into a little legal trouble.) Christ has given us plenty of other ways we can “wash one another’s feet.” Like a good Teacher, Jesus provides many examples through scripture of how to be humble and how to have a serving heart. He gave of Himself and thought of others first. He didn’t think more highly of Himself over others. Now, it’s your turn to be a disciple by doing as Christ has. How will you fulfill your role in the body of Christ?

Not just my feet, Lord…

Heavenly Father, thank You for teaching and showing me what it is to display humility and servanthood. I will follow in Your teachings and humbly serve others as Your disciple. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
