Counterproductive

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
— JAMES 1:19 – 20 (NIV)

When we’re angry, we sometimes say things we don’t really mean. Anger doesn’t allow us to think straight or make the very best of decisions. It even causes us to hallucinate and see things that aren’t really there. We can get so mad that we see red! Everything is out of whack and no good thing can come out of this state of being.

Being angry is counterproductive to God’s plan. Human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Am I saying never get angry? Of course not. Anger is a very human emotion that you will experience from time to time. What I am suggesting is that you stay in control when experiencing this emotion. Well, Van. How do I stay in control when I’m angry? I’m glad you asked! Scripture says to be quick to listen and slow to speak. That means stop and listen to the Holy Spirit before you speak utilizing some other spirit. When you stop and listen to the Holy Spirit, He will give you the words or actions that will produce the righteousness that God desires. God will always provide you a way to escape adverse situations. Make sure you’re listening to the productive Spirit and not the counterproductive one.

Listen. God’s talking.

Heavenly Father, I make the choice today to not be counterproductive to Your plan. I will be quick to listen to Your Holy Spirit and slow to speak so that I may produce the righteousness You desire. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
