Crabs in a Barrel

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
— 1 THESSALONIANS 5:11 (NIV)

According to Urban Dictionary, the phrase “crabs in a barrel” derived from when harvesting crab, the crab as a group will pull down any crab that starts to climb out of the barrel in an attempt to be the first out of the barrel that holds them in.  As a people, we adopted this natural phenomenon to explain when a group of like situated people hurt those in their community attempting to get ahead by holding them back or putting them down.  The head-scratching thing about this is the crabs seem to do it to stop their fellow crab from getting hurt, but we as a people do it to hurt people.

When you encourage one another and build each other up, everyone wins. Instead of wasting your precious time plotting on keeping someone down, you exert positive energy lifting others up which allow you to grow as well. Today, give at least five people around you an encouraging word. Tell someone they’re doing a good job, you appreciate them, or you’re proud of them. Put positive thought into the world and blessings will return to you. I’ll start…
