Godly Parents

But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.
— JOSHUA 24:15 (NIV)

I read an article this week that offered a perspective concerning parents who choose to raise their children without God and how they are performing better at parenting. (You can read the article here: Article)  If anything, the author conveys his critical view of Christians that can prove healthy for a “self-check” if you will. Here’s an excerpt from the article:

“Hate to break it to you, Bible thumpers: Parents who raise their kids without religion are doing just fine, studies say, possibly even better. Overall, not believing in God seems to make people and their offspring more tolerant. Less racist. Less sexist. Enviro-friendly. And their kids care less about what's cool...”

Unfortunately, some churches have converted a personal relationship with God into religion. Statistics will prove various arguments correct while some studies will convince you to question what you’ve known to be true your entire life. But one thing stats or studies will never be able to bring into question, and that’s what God has done for you.

Churches may forget why they exist and certain groups of people may treat you wrong, but this is no reason to lose faith or hope in a God that has delivered you over and over again. As parents, it’s our job to make sure children know the difference between relationship and religion. To love and forgive people despite our differences. To show empathy toward others. To be good people and do good things for God’s approval and not the approval of man or to hold a position in a church building. Every day we are faced with choices and new reports that can lead you to believe one thing over the other, but for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!
