DISCIPLE OF LOVE

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
— JOHN 13:34 - 35 (NIV)

The word disciple is defined as a follower of Jesus during His life or a follower or student of a teacher, leader, or philosopher. A disciple can easily be identified with their leader by the words they speak as well as by the actions they take. There were distinct differences among followers of Martin Luther King, Jr. and El Hajj Malik El Shabazz (Malcolm X). In most cases, you could make an accurate account of who their leader was based on the words they chose, the way they dressed, and actions they took. With Christ as our leader, one way we should be identified as His disciple is how we love one another.

Jesus not only commanded us to love one another, but also provided an example of how to do so. While Jesus walked this earth, He showed compassion toward others and met their needs. Christ thought of others before Himself. He provided. He cared. He healed. He forgave. Even without these examples, we still know and understand what it is to feel God’s love. It’s our job as disciples to make sure the world feels that same love today.  Be a disciple of love and identify with Christ by extending the love of Jesus to someone in need.

Heavenly Father, I will show the world I am Your disciple by following Your command and love everyone as You have loved me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
