Get to the Root

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue, we praise our Lord and Father, and with it, we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.
— JAMES 3:7 – 9 (NIV)

Nothing can ruin a freshly cut, green, manicured lawn than a single dandelion. This particular weed seems to pop up out of nowhere! While it can be a nuisance, the amazing thing about the dandelion is, when tamed and used properly, the health benefits of dandelion include relief from liver disorders, diabetes, urinary disorders, acne, jaundice, cancer, and anemia. It also helps in maintaining bone health, skin care and is a benefit to weight loss programs. (Click here to read more about the 13 Surprising Benefits of Dandelion.)

Just as a single dandelion can visually ruin rolling fields of beautiful grass, the tongue can spiritually ruin a well-dressed, great smelling, charismatic, bible-toting Christian. The tongue is the smallest organ of the body, but seemingly can cause the most damage if not used for God’s glory. The bible describes the tongue as a restless evil and full of deadly poison, but when used properly, it can give life, edify others, and speak God’s blessings into existence. To remove the dandelion, you can’t simply pluck it out. It’ll grow back even stronger. You have to get to the root in order to remove it. Likewise, if your tongue produces evil and deadly poison from your choice of words, you have to root it out by using the Word of God. Train yourself to praise our Lord and Father with it and not curse each other who have been made in God’s likeness.
