Start Them Off Right

Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.
— PROVERBS 22:6 (NIV)

First day of school. Nothing like a fresh start and breaking in those new school supplies and clothes. Even with the joys that come along with a new school year, I can’t help but be plagued with the “What if’s…” What if my child is bullied? What if the teacher isn’t caring? What if they follow the wrong crowd?

Instead of wasting precious time worried about the “What if’s” of life, use that time to talk to your children about the “Do’s and Don’ts” according to Christ. Train them to determine right from wrong and cause and effect. Teach them how God wants us to treat one another. Tell them who Jesus created them to be so they understand what they aren’t.

I’ve learned that it isn’t the teacher’s job to educate my children. It’s not even the pastor’s or church’s job to tell my child who God is. It’s my job. Educators and religious leaders are there to support what I’ve already trained my child to be.

Heavenly Father, I commit to start my children off on the way they should go. I know Your word will remain in them and they will not turn from it when they are old. Be with every child today and the next day, Lord. Bless them, their parents, and their teachers. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
