Be Still

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
— PSALM 46:10 (KJV)

The report of police violence involving their interaction with citizens over the past 48 hours has really perplexed me. Because of my faith in God and belief in His plan, I no longer ask God why does He allow these tragedies to take place, but instead ask, “What can I do?” But before the Holy Spirit spoke to me, I initially was angered by these senseless killings. I became vexed by comments left on websites and social media saying, “If he would have complied…” or “He had to be doing something…” As I became more and more emotional I searched my mind for some form of retaliation. A blog. A protest. Something! But then I heard God say, “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”

When God tells you to be still, it doesn’t mean do nothing. Quite the opposite. In my case it means to place this spirit of wrath and vengefulness under submission to Christ and take on His mind. The word still is a translation of the Hebrew word rapa meaning to cease or let down. Some biblical scholars say the phrase “be still” means to stop frantic activity. Scripture says God will be exalted among the heathen and in the earth. The only way for that to happen is through believers that are led by the Holy Spirit and not those that believe matters can be resolved by their own hands and worldly way of thinking.

Today is a time for action, but only after you be still and receive direction from God.

Heavenly Father, I will be still and heed Your direction and not give into my flesh. I will exalt you among the heathen and in the earth. I know You are God! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
