Forgive Them

Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’
— LUKE 23:34 (NIV)

As Christians, we are not exempt from suffering disappointment and experiencing grief at the hands of fellow believers and non-believers. Jesus said we would be blessed one hundred fold in this life, but along with that comes persecution. We’d love to say, “Jesus! Bring on the hundredfold blessing, but hold the persecution!” But it’s the persecution that grooms us into the humble beings that are able to appreciate God’s blessings and increase.

So, what do you do when the people you love hurt you? How do you deal with being an anchor for a group of people only to watch them sail away (in the boat you helped repair) while your ship is now sinking and in need of help? What do you say when those you trusted become disloyal? My friend, you do what Jesus did while He suffered persecution. Forgive them. Forgive them because they don’t know what they’re doing when the persecute you. While their actions may be out fear, low self-esteem, malice, or to protect their image, Jesus uses it to bless you to your next level in life. Remember, God loves you and is always working on your behalf. If He is for you, who can be against you?

Look to God. Not people.

Heavenly Father, I realize the power and blessing in hating the sin and not the sinner. You taught me as a Christian to love and forgive. Today, I forgive those who have hurt me, abandoned me, or wronged me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
