Know By Heart

My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.
— PROVERBS 3:1-2 (NIV)

I love music. Different songs take me to different places. When I hear I’ll See You When I Get There by Lou Rawls, I’m reminded of being dragged shopping with my mom and favorite aunt. If I hear Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See by Busta Rhymes I immediately travel back to 1997 when my sands and I crossed into our fraternity. If I hear Thank You For My Life by Smokie Norful, well, first of all, I’m in tears, but I recall how many things God has brought me through. I have these songs memorized. One could say I “know them by heart” and when I recall them, they remind me of times in my life and often allow me to escape what’s around me.

God’s word is similar in many ways. His word can not only help you escape what you’re facing, but change your mindset and circumstances. Just like you have favorite songs you remember in different scenarios, Jesus wants you to remember His teachings and keep His commands in your heart. When you’re reminded of rough times, remember He’s working all things out for your good. The times you feel in lack, remember the time He supplied all your needs and He can do it again. When you know God’s word by heart you’ll be able unlock His peace and prosperity in your life whenever there’s a need. Don’t forget what God has taught you. Keep His commands and know them by heart.
