For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.
— Proverbs 23:7 (NIV)

I never realized how much my environment influenced my thinking. I know the bible speaks on setting your mind on things above and not worldly things (Col. 3:2 NIV) and I’ve heard teachings about guarding your “ear and eye gates,” but man, do I like listening to Tupac! I still try to fool myself by saying things like, “I won’t repeat the curse words” or “I just listen to it for the beat,” but unfortunately those gates I mentioned don’t have a filter.

You may not realize it, but what you listen to and view repeatedly affects you immensely. Sure, you’re a good person and you don’t do the things mentioned in the music, music videos, or movies, but those things aren’t building you spiritually or reminding you of who you are in Christ. What you commit to memory or practice you are sure to become good at.

Scripture says what you think in your heart, you become. It’s a work in progress for me. I try to pump Christian music into my commute to work. And you know what the funny thing is? I swear I’m happier and have a better day at work when I do. Hmph.

Heavenly Father, I will be careful what I allow into my ear and eye gate. I will focus my mind more on things above and not worldly things. I want my heart to reflect thoughts of You and Your love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
