Cross-Training

Then He said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.’
— Luke 9:23 (NIV)

My daughter plays varsity basketball for her school. When basketball season is over, she participates in track and cross country. This sort of activity during the off season is known as cross-training. Cross-training is when you participate in two or more sports in order to improve fitness and performance, especially in a main sport. Her main sport is basketball, but to improve in it, she partakes in other activities to increase her performance.

As a Christian, you are to follow and serve Christ. Though there is no “off season” in serving Jesus, but you can still cross-train by serving others. In order to effectively serve others, you have to deny your own needs in order to meet the needs of others. This was a daily practice of selflessness Jesus lived by and He wants you to follow in His footsteps. So don’t forget to “cross-train!” It’ll help you improve towards your main goal.

Heavenly Father, I want to be Your disciple. I will deny myself, pick up my cross daily, and follow You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
